The most expensive home theater mistakes happen before any installer shows up: a projector bought for a room with too much daylight, a 65-inch TV in a room that needed an 85, speakers that cannot go where they need to because the wall is a window. A home theater consultation exists to stop those mistakes. If you have never had one, here is what actually happens when AV Geeks comes to an Ottawa home.

We look at the room, not a catalogue

The consultation starts in the room you want to use. We measure it — length, width, ceiling height, where the seating will be — and note the windows, doors, the fireplace, where the wall studs run and where existing wiring can be reached. A basement with no windows and a main-floor family room with a wall of glass are completely different projects even if the budget is the same, and the room decides most of the design before we talk about equipment.

Screen: projector or TV, and how big

From the seating distance we work out the screen size that fills your view without straining it, and whether the room can support a projector. Projectors give you the biggest picture per dollar but need light control; large-format TVs work in bright rooms and need no screen. We will tell you honestly which suits the room, including when the answer is “a big TV, not a projector”.

Sound: layout before brands

We sketch the speaker layout for the format that fits the room — 5.1, 7.1 or Atmos with height channels — and mark where each speaker and the subwoofer should go. That drawing is what makes the wiring plan possible. Only after the layout is set do we talk about specific speakers, and we will say whether in-wall, in-ceiling or freestanding suits the room and your tolerance for visible equipment.

Wiring, power and control

We trace the routes for speaker cable, HDMI, network and power, and flag anything that needs an electrician. We also ask how you want to run the system — one remote, a phone app, wall keypads — because a theatre nobody can operate does not get used. If the room is being renovated, this is where we tell you what to pre-wire now even if the equipment comes later.

Budget, honestly

We ask what you want to spend and tell you what that buys in this room, and where the money matters most. In almost every theatre the priorities are screen size, the centre channel and the subwoofer; the last dollars go to the surrounds and cosmetics. If your budget does not fit the room you have in mind, we say so and suggest a staged plan rather than a compromised system.

What you leave with

A written plan: room drawing with screen and speaker positions, equipment list with alternatives, wiring plan, and a quote with each item priced separately so you can adjust. There is no obligation. Many clients use the consultation to plan a renovation months ahead; others book the install the same week.
